These occur when there is a chance alignment of the moon and sun as seen from the Earth. If you are lucky and happen to be or travel to the path where the moon excactly lines up with the solar disc, you will see a total eclipse. You can see the solar corona and prominences.
You can see the prominences and other solar detail now without an eclipse.
