This is one of the nearer galaxies and is of similar magnitude to many in the Virgo Supercluster. Due to its higher declination, it is a lot easier to spot than those in the supercluster. I've spotted it in 15x70 binoculars but I've only seen its true nature in larger amateur telescopes at star parties. What is also amazing is the nearby galaxy (NGC 5195) which exerts a tidal pull on M51 and gives it its distorted shape.
