These occur when there is a chance alignment of the Earth and sun as
seen from the moon. As the Earth is much bigger than the moon, these occur
more frequently and cover a larger part of the earth's surface. When the
moon is eclipsed, it can appear any colour from a coppery red to almost
pitch black.
